The appointment of Clare Bottle as chair of the Northamptonshire Logistics Industry Forum (NLIF) signals a renewed push to strengthen Northamptonshire logistics, with a sharper focus on skills growth and closer collaboration between business and education.

Clare, chief executive of the UK Warehousing Association, takes on the role at a time when employers across Northamptonshire logistics are under increasing pressure to secure talent and improve productivity. The forum, hosted by the University of Northampton (UON forum), brings together businesses, public sector partners and educators to address shared challenges and support long-term economic growth.

Clare brings both national influence and local experience. Earlier in her career, she managed a warehouse on Brackmills, one of the county’s key logistics hubs. She also previously served as chair of governors at Northampton School for Girls, giving her direct insight into the education landscape.

Clare said the Northamptonshire logistics sector remains central to the economy but is often overlooked, adding that improving understanding of the industry and creating clearer career pathways will be essential to delivering sustained skills growth. She said the forum provides a practical opportunity to bring employers and education providers closer together to achieve that aim.

The Northamptonshire Logistics Industry Forum has developed into a platform for coordinated action rather than discussion alone. Therefore, businesses involved are expected to play a more active role in shaping training provision and influencing future workforce development.

For employers, the implications are significant. A more aligned approach between industry and education should help ease recruitment pressures and improve workforce readiness. As a result, the sector is better positioned to respond to changing operational demands.

Cathy Smith, dean of research and knowledge exchange at the University of Northampton, said Clare’s appointment reflects the forum’s ambition to strengthen its impact. Cathy said Clare is widely recognised across warehousing UK for her leadership and ability to bring organisations together, which will support closer links between the university, businesses and the wider community.

The forum will continue to focus on innovation, sustainability and employment. Consequently, Northamptonshire logistics is expected to maintain its position as a leading UK hub, supported by a stronger pipeline of skilled workers.

The appointment also reflects a broader shift towards collaboration as a driver of growth. By aligning education with industry need, the Northamptonshire Logistics Industry Forum is aiming to deliver tangible benefits for businesses while supporting the county’s long-term economic resilience.
