Northampton Town of Culture 2028 bid has been submitted, with local leaders positioning the initiative as a driver for investment, regeneration and business growth.

Cultural organisations and community partners have jointly submitted an Expression of Interest under the title We Are Northampton. The proposal sets out plans for a year-long programme designed to celebrate the town’s heritage while supporting economic growth and increasing access to cultural activity.

More than 30 partners across culture, education, business and the community have contributed to the bid. As a result, the programme aims to attract new funding, increase town centre footfall and create opportunities linked to the visitor economy.

If shortlisted, the councils will receive a £60,000 development grant to produce a detailed programme. Consequently, the bid could unlock further investment and strengthen Northampton’s position as a regional destination.

The programme builds on Northampton’s strengths in manufacturing, performance and grassroots creativity. It also aligns with ongoing town centre regeneration, which is expected to create new commercial and cultural opportunities.

The proposal includes four themes:

  • Making and Makers, focusing on sectors such as leathercraft, shoemaking and motorsport
  • New Town New Voices, highlighting migration stories and creative talent
  • Everyday Culture, bringing events into public spaces across the town
  • Living Heritage, connecting communities, traditions and historic sites

In addition, young people would play a central role through a proposed Youth Cultural Board, alongside apprenticeships and mentoring schemes linked to the creative industries.

Cllr Mark Arnull, Leader of West Northamptonshire Council, said Northampton has a strong foundation to build on. “Northampton has a proud story and a creative spirit that runs through every part of our town. This bid is about shining a light on the people, places and traditions that make our wonderful town unique, and giving our communities new opportunities to take part, connect and thrive. Becoming the UK Town of Culture would help us bring fresh investment into the town, support our young people, boost local businesses and show the country what Northampton has to offer. We are ready for this challenge and excited for the amazing opportunities it would bring to people who truly deserve it.”

The Mayor of Northampton, Cllr Jane Birch, said the town has already demonstrated its ability to deliver major events. “We’re excited to be part of Northampton’s bid to become the UK Town of Culture in 2028. Last year saw the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of Northampton and a celebration of sport when the Women’s Rugby World Cup came to town. These events brought communities and organisations together to deliver a remarkable cultural programme, showcasing the town’s passion and pride, while demonstrating our capacity for creativity and partnership working. Now we have an opportunity to build on that momentum, knowing that Northampton has the ambition, community backing and confidence needed to deliver a memorable Town of Culture programme. A successful bid would bring significant benefits. It’s a chance to put Northampton firmly on the map, celebrate our culture and heritage, and add a new chapter to our shared history.”

Overall, the Northampton Town of Culture 2028 bid is being positioned as more than a cultural programme. Instead, it represents a long-term opportunity to support business growth, attract visitors and strengthen the local economy.
