Businesses in Northamptonshire are being invited to mentor students at the University of Northampton as part of a programme aimed at supporting the transition into employment.

The university’s Professional Mentoring Programme pairs undergraduate students with industry professionals for a 12-week period, with participants expected to meet at least six times to discuss career options, workplace expectations and professional development.

Since launching nine months ago, the scheme has matched 84 final-year students with mentors.

Rowena Panter, mentoring coordinator at the University of Northampton, said the initiative had been well received. “Mentors meet with their mentees at least six times, with flexibility around availability, to explore career options, industry insight and professional development,” she said.

She added that feedback from both students and mentors had been “overwhelmingly positive” and highlighted the value of closer links between the university and local employers.

The programme is open to professionals at all stages of their careers, from early-career employees to senior leaders. Training and guidance are provided, and mentors can choose their level of involvement.

Panter said the university was keen to expand participation. “We look forward to talking with businesses about the mutual benefits the Professional Mentoring Programme offers,” she said.

Professionals interested in taking part can register through the university’s website or contact the mentoring team directly.
