WORKING hard to ensure that customers enjoy their leisure time to the full – Scotts of Thrapston has an excellent reputation that is borne out by its success over almost a century.

Founded in 1920, Scotts offers a diverse range of timber products to the construction industry, including the stabling market, garden buildings and sports facilities.

Keeping it in the family are directors David Scott (third generation) and James Scott (fourth generation), working alongside Managing Director Peter Waddup to ensure the ongoing success of the Thrapston firm as it gears up for its 100th anniversary in four years’ time.

Part of the countdown to the centenary will be the refurbishment of the firm’s Bridge Street headquarters, as well as continuing investment in manufacturing facilities.

David Scott said: “Scotts has taken the opportunity, in recent years, to be very active in the construction and leisure industries, taking into account the buoyant economy and achieving our best results in the history of the company.

“The Scotts trussed rafter division, one of the preferred suppliers to many leading UK housebuilders and construction companies, has grown significantly with the increased demand for new housing across the country. Scotts designs and supplies trussed rafters, room-in-the-roof trusses and metal web floor joists for residential and commercial developments. Overall, our high-quality, crafted products continue to be appreciated by housebuilders, the professional equestrian market and homeowners.”

Scotts of Thrapston strives to meet the demands of the professional stabling market and private equestrian customer by offering bespoke solutions and its stables always feature at the two leading equestrian shows, Badminton and Burghley Horse Trials.

The leisure side of the business, including summerhouses and garden buildings, has outperformed expectations again this year and the firm continues to have great success at the prestigious flower shows at Chelsea and Hampton Court. Indeed, Scotts has developed a licensing partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), supplying a range of garden buildings under the RHS banner.

The firm also supplies timber pavilions to cricket, bowls and tennis clubs throughout the UK and has worked closely with Lord’s cricket ground in the development of a replica Lord’s bench.

The newer product area, within this buildings division, is for the educational sector and this has started exceptionally well, as the demand for additional classroom space is ever increasing. This education buildings division has created its own dedicated team, including in-house architects, to develop exciting and innovative designs.

One of the oldest divisions is the joinery division which manufactures mainly bespoke joinery including period sliding sash and casement windows, fire doors, internal and external flush or panelled doors, gates, porches and canopies. This side of the business caters for the self-build and renovation market as well as the construction sector in general.

In all, Scotts of Thrapston employs more than 100 staff, and prides itself on continually looking to recruit bright, young professionals and craftsmen to assist with their continued business growth for the future.
