THIS year training provider NITAL Training and Development are proud to announce two of their apprentices will be competing at the WorldSkills UK competition at Birmingham NEC from 13-15 November, the nation’s largest skills and careers event providing hands-on experiences that inspire young people to explore further education, skills and apprenticeships. The two competitors are: Zach, an Advanced Electronics Apprentice from Rexson Systems in Kettering, leading manufacturers of ink dispensing systems, paint dispensers and chemical blending equipment. He will be competing in the Industrial Electronics competition. Competing in the CNC Milling competition is Jordan, an Advanced Apprentice in Engineering Manufacturing employed by Techturn in Wellingborough, high-quality precision engineers serving a range of diverse customers including the local motorsport industry. Both have come through heats to make it to the grand final. In 2012 James Audley, Rexson Director of Engineering, identified an issue: “There was a need for staff, labour was the key but specifically younger people to teach and to develop. Rexson had considered apprenticeships and felt they would be an ideal way to meet this need, bringing in younger people is a long-term strategy and we needed new blood, their desire to progress made us decide apprenticeships were the way to go.” Neill Parkin, Techturn Director agrees: “Apprenticeships are a good way to mould people and it gives you the opportunity to give something back by passing on knowledge, as there is a skills gap. Jordan had been with Techturn as a trainee and we had identified his promise, he wanted to do an apprenticeship to further himself and we were keen on progressing him.” Both Rexson and Techturn see apprenticeships as a key ingredient to a healthy business; When it came to setting up the programmes Rexon spoke with NITAL, James said: “We are a small company and extremely busy, there needed to be a proper apprenticeship structure in place and we needed to ensure this would be managed to look after the apprentices. Every company should look at bringing in young people but it needs to be done right and NITAL have helped provide the required structure.” Neill added: “We will continue with apprentices in the future and recommend others to follow the same model. We use NITAL as they go that extra mile, help people to understand the apprenticeship programme and offer essential support and guidance.” NITAL will be in Birmingham to support the lads during the competition and can support you in your search for an apprentice.
