Councils pen letter to PM backing plans for Universal theme park

THE LEADERS and chief executives of the six local authorities have collectively endorsed Universal Destinations & Experiences’ potential theme park and resort project in Bedfordshire.

They have written to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to stress the “transformative potential” of the plan, which could create 20,000 jobs in construction and a further 20,000 directly and across the supply chain once the resort is open.

Cllr Adam Brown.

The project’s scale will help to transform the South East Midlands as one of the foremost visitor destinations in Europe and the World.

Cllr Adam Brown, leader of West Northamptonshire Council, said: “We fully endorse this project and want to show our full support and commitment to working with both our local authority partners and Universal Destinations & Experiences to maximise the benefits for local people and communities.

Jason Smithers.

“The South East Midlands is extremely well connected and with West Northants situated just over 30 minutes from Bedford, this project presents an array of opportunities for our residents including jobs, economic growth and an enhanced visitor economy with tourists from far and wide coming into West Northamptonshire to enjoy everything we have to offer.”

Jason Smithers, his counterpart at North Northamptonshire Council, added “Attracting such a huge, globally respected name as Universal Studios to our region will be a massive boost for the area as well as for the economy both in terms of the opportunities to be involved with the build but also the running of the park afterwards.

“This is an immensely exciting project and we are absolutely committed to making it become a reality.”

The letter is also signed by the chief executives and political leaders of Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire, Luton Borough and Milton Keynes City Councils.
