NITAL recently welcomed employer James Cooney Managing Director of Cooney Marine to the training academy in Kettering to find out how the first batch of traineeship learners were progressing on their programme. Cooney Marine usually recruit apprentices every year but in 2015 they decided to change the format for this and engaged with the traineeship programme to find their next batch of apprentices.

The traineeship is a full time programme offering those who are looking for an apprenticeship the opportunity to develop the relevant skills that will enable them to achieve this. Learners will work towards a Level 2 NVQ in Performing Engineering Operations which includes practical workshop based sessions in hand fitting, turning, milling, fabrication and welding. Alongside this there will be sessions in underpinning knowledge such as; health and safety, mechanical principles, engineering drawing/conventions, maths and English.

In addition to the engineering skills and knowledge the traineeship also incorporates essential employability skills training in; communication, CV building, application letter writing and interview techniques, plus the learners will get the chance to put everything in to practice through work experience at Cooney Marine.

James Cooney had this to say after meeting the learners and seeing what the academy has to offer; ‘I am very impressed with the training academy, it was great to see the students getting back to the basics and learning them properly, it will provide them with the best foundation and prepare them to be work ready from the moment they join us’. Cooney Marine are looking to recruit 7 learners from the traineeship programme in April 2016, they will all then go on to apprenticeships.

NITAL’s Traineeship programme represents an excellent opportunity for individuals to access Apprenticeships and gain essential engineering knowledge and skills taught in the right way. NITAL will be holding an open evening on Wednesday 3rd February 2016 for students, their parents and guardians to see what NITAL has to offer
