COULD you help them to unlock their true potential?
The Tresham Twelve (pictured) is a group of dedicated, talented and enthusiastic individuals, all of whom are eager to get their career development back on track with high quality engineering companies located within our region’s business community.
Each one of the Tresham Twelve has an NVQ Level 3 in Rail Engineering, following their enrolment onto a pioneering apprenticeship scheme designed to fast-track candidates into employment, in one of the nation’s most stable industry sectors. This course was launched in March 2013 by Evolve Business Training, in conjunction with Vital Rail, part of the Vital Services Group.
All classroom-based elements of the course were delivered at Tresham’s Corby Campus, with the work-based learning and practical areas provided by Vital Skills Training, at the group’s Greenacres site in Leicester.
Almost as soon as their fledgling engineering careers had begun to unfold, the twelve started to encounter challenges and difficulties totally beyond their control, commencing with the Vital Services Group entering into administration and subsequently being sold to the Manchester-based Morson Group. This move directly affected around 2,200 workers, as well as apprentices.
The sale to Morson served to stave off the threat of redundancies, and the Tresham Twelve – all of whom hold a PTS (Personal Track Safety) Card and a TIC (Track Induction Certificate) Licence, as well as their required English and Maths qualifications – were able to continue their apprenticeships under the aegis of the Morson Group – and carry on gaining invaluable, hands-on work experience at the Leicester site.
Steve Seddon, Client Services Director for Morson Group, commented: “The Morson Group has supported apprenticeship programmes for the past 30 years across various engineering sectors including rail, design and stress programmes. Working collaboratively with various national stakeholders, an investment of over £1m was made to secure the safeguarding of over 200 rail apprenticeships nationwide. To date, over 75% of the people who successfully completed their apprenticeships have entered employment.
“We wish the twelve apprentices every success in their future careers, and are pleased that they are now equipped with the Level 3 qualification they need.”
In addition to this, the twelve have been able to experience working on a fully-operating stretch of rail track, owned by the famous Northampton and Lamport Heritage Railway. This has stood them in extremely good stead for the future, and helped to test their newly-acquired engineering knowledge and skills in a real-time, practical environment.
Last week, however, the Tresham Twelve came to the end of their terms of employment with the Morson Group, as part of their apprenticeship, following the successful completion of their NVQ Level 3 qualifications in Rail Engineering and Rolling Stock. Now, they are all currently seeking jobs in the rail engineering, maintenance engineering and motor vehicle sectors, and Evolve Business Training and Tresham are calling on local employers to help find these hardworking, dedicated and passionate individuals their dream positions.
“These candidates are an absolute credit to both the College and themselves,” confirms Tresham Managing Director and Deputy Principal, Rachel Kay. “It’s now time to reach out to the local business community, in a concerted effort to help it secure the considerable talents of these twelve outstanding individuals.
“I can honestly say I’ve never met such a committed and positive group of people,” concludes Rachel. “Employers across Northamptonshire and further afield will certainly be spoilt for choice, and I’m sure there are many companies out there who would benefit greatly from having such proven potential on their payroll.
“Engineering is a great industry to work in and, with many companies increasingly suffering from an ageing workforce, to have such self-motivated, ambitious and qualified individuals all at the right age and at their disposal, will surely be an invaluable asset to any business going forward.”
