A BUSINESS, no matter how big or small, relies on its computer systems to keep it running efficiently – and the consequences of downtime and lost data should a problem occur are almost unthinkable.
For businesses where it is not practical to have in-house IT support, outsourcing to experts like those at Northamptonshire-based C37 is the obvious alternative.
Chris Walker, who runs C37, said: “When you think about how much companies rely on their computer systems these days, it is so important to make sure that everything is in place to protect a company should anything disastrous happen.

“All the important data should be available from another source – to protect against a computer system going down or something like flood or fire at a business premises. Imagine what would be lost if a server went down. It could include client contact information, financial data, email communications, current and archived work that has already been done for the business or on a client’s behalf. Many of my customers are in the creative sector, working on projects that might run for months so – imagine losing all that work as you near the end of a project.”
But just as important as having a back-up system in place, says Chris, is having a system that will prove to be user friendly and will not be abandoned because it’s too much hassle to use.
“Back-up systems should be as automatic as possible and set up to make a copy of your data on a regular basis to suit the client,” he said. “What doesn’t work is when you have a situation where your employees are given something they have to manage
themselves. Rather than head off home at the end of the day, they are being asked decide what data is backed-up and how it is managed – it just doesn’t work. It gets left for too long or forgotten about. Then when a problem does occur it quickly becomes clear the information hasn’t been backed up.”
