Businesses in Northampton town centre have voted overwhelmingly to renew the Northampton Business Improvement District (BID), unlocking more than £2.2 million to be invested in the area over the next five years.

The successful ‘Yes’ vote ensures continued funding for projects that improve the town centre trading environment and champion local business interests.

Voting closed on 30 October, with 82% of businesses supporting the renewal by number and 88% by rateable value, comfortably exceeding the thresholds required for renewal.

The new BID term will begin on 1 April 2026, with businesses holding a rateable value of £5,000 or above contributing through a levy. The collective fund will finance initiatives that enhance Northampton’s appeal and support economic growth.

Over the past term, Northampton BID has delivered a range of improvements — from green space projects such as St Katherine’s Gardens to enhanced town centre dressing, clean-up schemes and events designed to increase visitor footfall.

The renewal campaign was led by the BID board, made up of business representatives across the town, with support from pfbb UK, specialists in BID development and delivery.

Co-chairs Sali Brown and Andrea Smith welcomed the outcome, saying:

“This is fantastic news for Northampton. A huge congratulations to all the businesses that came together and rallied in support of the renewal ballot. Their collective effort has secured a ‘Yes’ vote, ensuring continued investment in our area.”

They added that the BID’s new business plan was informed by extensive consultation with local firms of all sizes, and funding will be channelled through three key strategic objectives designed to strengthen the town’s resilience and collaboration.
