Replacing units offers benefits

IT is almost a year since a total ban on use, in service and maintenance, came into force for a certain type of refrigerant gas, named R22, that was very popular in air conditioning equipment prior to 2003.

Burton Latimer based Griffiths Air Conditioning have been replacing these old systems for many of their customers over the past couple of years but there are still thousands of R22 systems in use which can no longer be maintained if they lose any gas through leakage.

R22 has a chemical make up that, if released into the atmosphere, damages the ozone layer, which in turn leads to global warming.

Business owner Ian Griffiths said: “Most of these old air conditioning systems have almost reached the end of their life anyway. Replacing them now with modern systems has many benefits. The new air conditioners are inverter driven so they use much less electricity. The newer refrigerant gasses are more environmentally friendly and up to 40 per cent more efficient. New systems that we install from the extensive Daikin range have a five-year warranty and most are on the Energy Technology List allowing businesses to claim Enhanced Capital Allowance tax relief.”

Griffiths maintain air conditioning systems throughout the county and their Service Team can often be seen working at large international concerns with county based premises through to small businesses with maybe just one single air conditioning system.

Air conditioning manufacturers recommend that maintenance is carried out at least every six months but Griffiths can organise each individual service contract to suit their client’s particular requirements.

Service intervals in dusty atmospheres will, for example, need to be more frequent.
