NORTHAMPTONSHIRE based architects, quantity surveyors and lead consultants, GSSArchitecture, have seen a significant increase in projects for their Arts and Leisure Team, which has often included specialist input from their in-house Historic Building Architects.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE based architects, quantity surveyors and lead consultants, GSSArchitecture, have seen a significant increase in projects for their Arts and Leisure Team, which has often included specialist input from their in-house Historic Building Architects.
Partner Tom Lyons said: “Sadly, this sector has been the victim of relatively low levels of funding and support in recent years, but at GSSArchitecture we have been involved in a range of very exciting community, cultural and leisure schemes of national importance in the county and across the whole of the country.”
The practice is currently developing designs for new and remodelled museum facilities in Northamptonshire, and has also just seen the opening of Leicester’s new Attenborough Arts Centre by Sir David Attenborough; a building which has already won an architectural award and has been shortlisted for four others.
The county practice has also been responsible for one of the most significant new museum and exhibition projects in the country, with the remodelling of Palace Green Library (situated at the heart of Durham’s extended World Heritage Site and in the grounds of Durham Cathedral) which includes the display of the Lindisfarne Gospels and the St. Cuthbert Gospel, transferred from The British Library. A similar project has also been recently completed at The Treasures Gallery in Leeds.
Tom Lyons added: “GSSArchitecture has also seen a series of successes in the development of drama and performance theatres, such as Stamford and Milton Keynes, and some significant new leisure and health schemes, promoting wider participation in the arts, sports and improved health.”
Some recent Northamptonshire and East Midlands projects include two new build, 25-metre, six-lane swimming pools, together with approved designs for two new leisure centres, also with new pools and eight court sports halls, as well as community gym, dance, drama and theatre facilities.
Another sports facility in the county is the new build sports hall, changing rooms and studios for Pitsford School, recently opened by Olympic silver medallist Colin Jackson CBE.
