WE have all been aware of the increased usage of smartphones over the last few years with everyone from teenagers to executives constantly looking at and checking their phones every few minutes.
It now seems to be acceptable, relatively normal and has begun to fit in to our society.
WE have all been aware of the increased usage of smartphones over the last few years with everyone from teenagers to executives constantly looking at and checking their phones every few minutes.
It now seems to be acceptable, relatively normal and has begun to fit in to our society. But there is one device that is going to take more time to fit in to our lives due to its decades of previous history, the watch, or to be more precise the smart watch.
Those who choose to wear a smart watch bear great responsibility to the future generations who choose to wear one and I am here to help with some smart watch etiquette. The first and most difficult problem to overcome is the lure of your notifications. You will be having lunch with a client, friend or family and you have just been mentioned again on Facebook, your smart watch gives you a polite buzz on your wrist to remind you and of course you have a quick look.
We have all been conditioned over the years to know that if someone looks at their watch they are checking the time as they are either bored or need to be somewhere else, either way it appears rude. You may be having the time of your life with the people you are with but they will see it differently. So like we are used to putting our phones on silent for meetings you must do the same with your watch. Taking calls on your smart watch is a cool thing to do but you really need to choose the location carefully when you use it. If you are out and about you will have your phone with you so use that.
Smart watch calling is best left in private when your phone is out of reach and people cannot eaves drop on your conversations. No pun intended but only time will make looking at your smart watch an acceptable part of society like the smart phone is today. Until that happens we will have to find more surreptitious ways of glancing at our smart watches. We know you would rather be checking your watch than talking to actual human beings so our advice is to give more hugs. Just remember to hoist your sleeve a little when you move in for the hug so you can check your notifications over his or her shoulder as you embrace.
