Leaders from Northamptonshire’s property and construction sector met with Northampton MP Mike Reader last month to discuss how more local businesses can be involved in delivering major development projects across the county.
Matthew Abraham, managing director of FormFive, and Parm Bhangal, managing director of Bhangal’s Construction Consultants, attended the meeting on behalf of PropConnect, the regional property and construction network.
During the discussion, they highlighted the importance of ensuring that major construction projects in Northamptonshire make greater use of the county’s local supply chain.
One of the key issues raised was the increasing use of national procurement frameworks for council-led developments. Industry leaders said this approach can result in non-local main contractors securing projects, which may reduce opportunities for Northamptonshire-based firms.
PropConnect believes stronger collaboration between local authorities and the regional construction sector could help address that challenge. By working more closely with local networks and suppliers, councils could help ensure that more projects are delivered by businesses operating within the county.
The meeting also explored ways to raise the profile of Northampton and its business community. According to Matthew and Parm, the region has the experience and capacity needed to support large-scale development.
Logistics investment was another topic discussed. Northamptonshire continues to attract major logistics developments because of its central location and strong transport infrastructure, creating growing opportunities for construction firms across the region.
Mike Reader expressed support for PropConnect’s work in strengthening the regional property and construction network. He said he would be happy to support the organisation as it continues to expand and help its members grow.
One idea discussed during the meeting was the potential for an industry expo that could bring together businesses, developers and policymakers in partnership with PropConnect.
Mike also invited a small group of PropConnect members to visit Parliament for further conversations about how the sector can support economic growth in Northamptonshire.
Matthew Abraham said the meeting formed part of a wider effort to ensure PropConnect members have greater visibility with decision makers.
“Parm and I are always thinking about how we can give back to PropConnect members,” said Matthew Abraham. “Meeting Mike Reader MP is one of the many actions we have taken to strengthen the network across the county.
“We want to see businesses grow, opportunities increase and members being approached on relevant projects. These outcomes only happen through discussions with the right organisations and decision-makers.
“The next step is continuing those conversations with the council.”
PropConnect says it will continue working with policymakers and local authorities to ensure Northamptonshire businesses are well positioned to benefit from future construction and development projects.
