A Northamptonshire-based web design agency specialising in low-carbon WordPress websites has achieved B Corp certification.

Poppy Eco Hub, founded last year by Marie Baker and Daniel Lister, is the first UK business dedicated to building sustainable and accessible websites that meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards and comply with the European Accessibility Act (EAA).

Verified by B Lab, the non-profit organisation behind the global B Corp movement, the certification recognises companies that meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. There are now around 9,700 certified B Corps in the UK.

The accreditation process took around nine months to complete, with Poppy Eco Hub achieving an impressive overall score of 98.1 – well above the minimum pass mark of 80.

Marie Baker, director at Poppy Eco Hub, said: “We are over the moon to announce that Poppy Eco Hub is now officially a B Corp after just over a year of trading. We knew from the start that becoming a B Corp aligned perfectly with our mission — to create sustainable, accessible and visually stunning websites that empower organisations while reducing environmental impact.”

She added that the team is committed to helping clients understand how to design for both accessibility and sustainability: “The internet has made the world smaller, but it’s also contributing to environmental damage and remains less inclusive than it should be. Our goal is to educate businesses on how to reduce their digital carbon footprint while building websites that work for everyone.”

The company expects demand for its services to grow following the introduction of the European Accessibility Act, which came into effect on 28 June. The Act requires businesses operating in the EU to make websites, mobile applications, and related services accessible in a consistent and inclusive way.

Chris Turner, executive director of B Lab UK, said: “We are delighted to welcome Poppy Eco Hub to the B Corp community. The company will be a fantastic addition to a movement that believes business can be a force for good.”
