Yusen Logistics has officially opened its £280 million Northampton distribution centre at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton, creating the company’s largest facility anywhere in the world.

The 1.2 million sq ft Sustainable Distribution Centre at Milton Malsor, close to Junction 15 of the M1, began operating in June before its official opening ceremony on September 24. Around 150 people are expected to work at the site.

SEGRO has put Yusen Logistics’ commitment to the Northampton distribution centre at £280 million. The logistics company was the first customer to take a building at the 600-acre SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton development.

The centre has capacity for 236,000 pallet positions and uses automated storage and retrieval systems, autonomous mobile robots and four-way pallet shuttle systems.

It operates as a multi-user contract logistics facility, with capacity to support customers in sectors including e-commerce, retail, healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Dedicated temperature-controlled areas have also been incorporated for healthcare and pharmaceutical operations.

David Evans, managing director of Yusen Logistics UK, said: “Today marks an important milestone for our business.

“The Sustainable Distribution Centre has been developed to meet the evolving needs of customers and global supply chains. By bringing together advanced technology, efficient operations and a highly skilled workforce, we are building a future-ready logistics platform that delivers long-term value for our customers while supporting sustainable growth.”

The building has achieved a BREEAM Outstanding rating and incorporates solar energy generation, rainwater harvesting and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Its location also gives Yusen access to the Strategic Rail Freight Interchange at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton. The 35-acre terminal connects to the West Coast Main Line through the Northampton Loop Line and was completed by SEGRO earlier in 2025.

Mike Reader, MP for Northampton South, said: “Yusen Logistics’ investment in this remarkable new Sustainable Distribution Centre is a powerful vote of confidence in Northampton, our workforce and the wider Northamptonshire economy.

“Not only will the facility employ 150 people, it demonstrates what the next generation of logistics can look like, technologically advanced, productive and environmentally responsible.”

The Yusen building was the first warehouse to be constructed at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton. The wider development has consent for five million sq ft of logistics and warehousing space, alongside the rail freight terminal and improvements to surrounding transport infrastructure.
