SINCE being founded in 1879, GSSArchitecture has grown from its Kettering headquarters to become a nationwide practice with offices across the UK in Harrogate, Gloucester, Milton Keynes and Newcastle.
Throughout its history, the practice has been heavily involved in many developments across North Northamptonshire, including the planning and expansion of Corby which has seen significant growth in recent years.
Projects within the local area date back as far as 1879 with works by the practice’s founder John Alfred Gotch, such as the Alfred East Art Gallery, Kettering Borough Council Offices (formerly Kettering Grammar School) and most of the HSBC (formerly Midland Bank) buildings across the country. The first building managed and designed by the practice in Corby was the Manor House, built in 1890 on Cottingham Road, a building that GSSArchitecture has since converted to offices, rebuilt after a fire and, most recently, renovated into the School of Catering for Tresham College.
Since then, GSSArchitecture has been integral to the development of some of the larger strategic planning masterplans, including the Great Oakley residential urban expansion area, Corby Southern Gateway, St. James Industrial Area and North Kettering Business Park, which, in turn, have provided buildings such as Brooke Weston Academy, Oakley Vale Academy, Southern Gateway Fuel Filling Station, Tesco Superstore, and 4 million square feet of new B1 Distribution Units.
Other projects of note by GSSArchitecture include the only school to be built during the war at Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Primary in Corby, originally designed to be converted overnight into a hospital, and the town’s first purpose-built hotel in 1935, as well as a range of distinctive churches and shops.
More recently, GSSArchitecture has been involved in expansion and development projects for Corby Town Football Club’s new stadium, the nationally acclaimed Maplefields Special Educational Needs School and in October 2017 completed the delivery of Corby Technical School, all alongside designs and masterplans for future residential, commercial, leisure, retail and education projects.
Tom Lyons, partner at GSSArchitecture said:”GSS Architecture are very proud of their part in the development and success of Corby nationally. It is an ongoing relationship spanning over 100 years and one we are very pleased to continue to be part of current projects in the town delivering new retail, housing, employment, leisure and education facilities. Corby has always been a-forward looking and innovative place and it continues to be a privilege to be part of the towns continuing growth and success.”
