A Rushden-based family business has secured two major titles at the SME Northamptonshire Business Awards, including the overall winner accolade.

Inter County Service Group Ltd was named Family Business of the Year before being crowned Overall Winner at the ceremony, held at cinch Stadium at Franklin’s Gardens. The double success marks a significant milestone for the Northamptonshire firm, which has operated for nearly five decades.

Founded in 1978 by Keith Nicholson, the business began as a small office cleaning company and has since grown into a multi-service provider. Today, Inter County delivers commercial cleaning, waste management, washroom hygiene services and janitorial supplies to organisations across the East Midlands.

The company remains family-run, now involving second and third generations, and employs more than 400 people. It works with a range of clients, including schools, housing associations and national brands, with a focus on long-term partnerships.

Callum Nicholson, finance director at Inter County Service Group, said the recognition reflected the efforts of the wider team. “We are absolutely delighted to win both Family Business of the Year and the Overall Winner award. It’s an incredible achievement for everyone connected to Inter County,” said Callum.

He added that the awards held particular significance for the family behind the business. “What made the moment particularly special is that the whole family were able to attend and celebrate together on the night. This business has always been about family, not just the Nicholson family, but our wider team and the relationships we have built with our clients over the years who we treat as family.”

The Family Business of the Year category recognises organisations that combine commercial growth with strong family values. Inter County has operated under that model since its founding and continues to expand its services across the region.

Following the win, the business will now represent Northamptonshire at the National SME Awards. The final will take place at the Leonardo Royal Hotel London Tower Bridge in November.
