Northampton social enterprise The Good Loaf has invested in transforming its town centre café through a partnership with Northampton College, using student-led design to enhance customer experience while supporting local skills development.

The artisan bakery and café, based on Overstone Road, worked with Level 3 Illustration and Art and Design students on a live creative brief to deliver a series of large-scale murals reflecting the business’s values and social mission.

Following a competitive selection process, four students — Greta Pogany, Ruby Seymour, Wren Taylor and Eden Linnell — were chosen to develop and install the final designs. They worked on-site throughout January, scaling and painting the artwork directly onto the café walls while meeting client expectations and deadlines.

Katie Brosnan, illustration teacher at Northampton College, said the project was designed to replicate real commercial conditions. “The mural project forms part of our commitment to providing students with meaningful, industry-focused opportunities that connect creative education with local organisations and social impact,” she said.

She added: “We’re grateful to The Good Loaf for giving our students the platform to showcase their talents. It’s been a brilliant experience for them and will stand them in good stead for their future careers.”

For The Good Loaf, the collaboration formed part of a wider investment in its physical environment, brand identity and customer-facing space, alongside its core purpose as a social enterprise.

The business operates both as a community café and a wholesale bakery supplying businesses across Northamptonshire. Its primary mission is to provide paid employment and training opportunities for vulnerable local women, supporting long-term independence and stability.

Chief executive Suzy van Rooyen said the murals had delivered benefits beyond the visual upgrade. “Our core mission is to provide life-changing employment opportunities for vulnerable local women, supporting them to break cycles of poverty, unemployment and offending,” she said.

She added: “This collaboration with Northampton College has further strengthened our community spirit. Customers have praised the murals for making the space feel bright and lovely, while women on placement here have expressed pride in the transformation, describing the café as warm and inviting.”

The Good Loaf is open from 9am to 2.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday.
