The Northamptonshire Scone, a student-developed food product created using ingredients sourced from across the county, will make its commercial debut at Delapré Food Festival this weekend before going on sale at Delapré Abbey for six months.
Created by students from Moulton College, the product won a recent culinary competition involving colleges from across Northamptonshire. The team developed the Northamptonshire Scone over several months, combining local ingredients with a contemporary take on a traditional recipe.
The apple cider scone will be served with whipped honey and cinnamon butter and has been designed to showcase produce from Northamptonshire suppliers, including flour from Whitworths, apples sourced from Earls Barton and Saxby’s Cider.
Chloe, one of the students behind the product, said: “We’re using the Northamptonshire link through our ingredients. For example, we’re using Whitworth’s for the flour, apples from Earls Barton, and Saxby’s Cider.”
The students said they wanted to create a product that reflected the county’s food heritage while offering something distinctive for consumers.
Erin said: “I’m really excited for everyone to try our scone. I think it’s different from tradition, but familiar enough that people will be tempted to try it.
“Pairing it with the whipped honey and cinnamon butter adds a really nice element and enhances the apple flavours within the scone.”
Festival visitors will be among the first to sample the Northamptonshire Scone when it goes on sale at Delapré Food Festival on 7 and 8 June. The students will operate their own stall alongside local artisan producers and food businesses exhibiting across the Delapré Abbey estate.
The opportunity extends beyond the festival weekend. Following the event, the Northamptonshire Scone will be added to the menu at The Orangery café at Delapré Abbey, where it will remain available for six months.
Michael, another member of the winning team, said: “We’re really looking forward to going to Delapré Food Festival. We’ve worked really hard on this product and put a lot of time and effort into it. I think that people are really going to enjoy it.”
The launch forms part of Delapré Food Festival’s wider celebration of regional food and drink producers, with exhibitors, chef demonstrations, tasting sessions and masterclasses taking place throughout the weekend.
