Police have you in their sights

THE size of a vehicle registration number at a distance of 20m is the accepted level of good eyesight required to pass the UK driving test.

But since most of the population pass their driving test when they are young adults with, presumably, good eyesight, the questions arises how often do they retake that test? The road safety charity Brake have teamed up with a number of police forces and during the month of September any driver stopped by a police officer will have their eyesight checked. Failing to pass the test will result in them losing their licence immediately.

By the time you read this it will probably be October so you will be pleased to know that you have time to go to Specsavers and get your eyes checked. You will also be pleased to know that the local police force wasn’t involved in the exercise. However, you know that the campaign is bound to be deemed successful and that the policy will inevitably be adopted nationwide. If it saves one life then it is to be applauded. Our advice is to check your eyesight and remain a safe driver, not a wise pedestrian.

Quiz time… which model of motor car holds the record for selling the most vehicles in the world, ever? You may be surprised to discover it is the Toyota Corolla, a model name that disappeared from UK and European markets with the advent of models like the Auris. However, the folk at Toyota have announced that the Corolla is to return to the European marketplace when the Auris is replaced in early 2019. In line with current environmental thinking, the model line-up will include petrol engines and two hybrid variants, but no diesel engines. It should also help the Corolla remain the world’s best selling car.

Finally, the car manufacturers seems to have completed their WLTP changes and vehicle supply and ordering are returning to normal which is good news. So if you are considering changing a vehicle for one with now realistic CO2 and mpg figures why not speak to one of the team at Alpha Contracts Leasing and we can provide advice about your choices, where each type of fuel fits in your fleet and how the benefit in kind tax rules affect your choice of vehicle. Safe motoring.
