AWARD-winning curry chef Tipu Rahman from Tamarind on Wellingborough Road, is preparing to dish up his two millionth poppadom.
Tipu Rahman is set to reach the milestone this month, as part of the restaurant’s 12th anniversary celebrations.
Tamarind serve up more than 3,000 of the chickpea flour-based discs every week.
Tipu said: “Poppadoms have always been popular with our customers and most diners have two or three each whenever they come. We always put a couple extra in our takeaway orders.
“We thought it would be fun to work out how many we have served over 12 years and couldn’t believe it when we realised it was almost two million. It’s incredible but just shows how the people of Northampton have taken the humble poppadom to their hearts.”
The most popular dishes are Tipu’s award-winning mango chicken and genghis said – a combination of minced lamb, chicken and king prawns.
The executive chef was named International Curry Chef of the Year in 2009 and in 2012 landed a spot in the Guinness Book of Records when he built a 5ft 7in tower made entirely of poppadoms.
He said: “The past 12 years have been absolutely wonderful and the restaurant has gone from strength to strength. It just shows that anything is possible with hard work, good staff and loyal customers.
“Northampton is a great place to do business and we are very grateful to all of our customers for their continued support.”
The restaurant has employed almost 200 different people since it launched, but three members of the team have remained there since day one.
Restaurant manager Aklakur Rana, tandoori chef Abdul Matin and chef Abdul Ahad have remained a constant part of the Tamarind team.
The restaurant will celebrate its 12th anniversary with a VIP party for invited guests including The Queen’s representative in Northamptonshire, Lord Lieutenant David Laing, on Tuesday, February 7.
