DACHSER UK, part of the German-owned Dachser organisation, a major international logistics provider, has signed a new five-year contract with the fast-growing retailer Aldi. The company will provide a warehouse platform as well as UK and Ireland distribution services for a wide range of the supermarket chain’s products.
On the back of the additional business this brings to Dachser a lease has been recently signed on a brand new warehouse, adjacent to its existing logistics centre along Thomas Dachser Way in the Brackmills business park. This facility will provide the necessary additional capacity to accommodate a combined warehouse and distribution operation for Aldi’s beverages and general ambient products.
Dachser opened its own purpose-built integrated logistics centre in Brackmills in June 2014 consolidating its operations, which had previously been spread over various sites, and creating its UK headquarters in Northampton; the facility occupies a 7.4-hectare site and represented, at the time an investment of EUR 26 million (£23m). Now the adjacent facility, which comprises a warehouse of just over 16,000 square metres and adds to Dachser’s footprint under a 10-year lease agreement.
Dachser has been working with Aldi for more than 25 years in the UK, during which time the logistics provider has operated an increasingly varied portfolio of customs services, inbound logistics, freight forwarding, warehousing and value added services for the fast expanding retailer.
In 2011, in response to Aldi’s strategic objective to improve product availability and shorten lead times to its rapidly growing store network, Dachser created an Excise Bond platform for wines and spirits. Inbound stock arrives on a daily basis from Aldi’s suppliers, and is received and stored under bonded conditions pending delivery to Aldi’s regional distribution centres in the UK and Ireland. The process enables regular and efficient deliveries to the distribution centres on the basis of multiple-product, consolidated orders comprising full trailer loads.
Aldi is appreciative of the rapid time in which they are able to consign increased volumes of products from a variety and expanding number of suppliers via Dachser’s services. The operation has proved itself to be highly scalable as evidenced by the opening of the new warehouse.
Dachser UK’s newly appointed Managing Director, Mark Rollinson is pleased to welcome more Aldi business for his company and the Northampton logistics community.
“This new contract in part proves how on-going success is bred from a true partnership approach, such as the one we have enjoyed with Aldi for some years,” he said. “Dachser is privileged to be involved with Aldi’s UK success story, providing an ever-increasing scope of logistics and supply-chain services from our strategically located base here in Northampton.”
