A family-run cleaning business based in Rushden is preparing for a change in leadership after more than 40 years in operation.
Inter County Service Group was founded in 1978 by Keith Nicholson as an office cleaning company. It has since expanded into a multi-service business providing commercial cleaning, waste management, washroom hygiene and janitorial supplies to organisations across Northamptonshire and beyond.
The company now employs more than 200 people and remains closely tied to the Nicholson family. Twelve family members currently work within the business, which now spans three generations.
Keith Nicholson’s wife, Lorna Nicholson, joined the firm in 1985. All six of their children — Gary, Emma, Yvonne, Mark, Martine and Callum Nicholson — have worked for the business, with five still employed today. Together, the siblings account for more than 120 years of combined service. Five members of the third generation have also joined the workforce.
As the company looks ahead to 2026, Inter County has confirmed a formal succession plan. Callum Nicholson, finance director, will assume responsibility for the day-to-day management of the business, supported by siblings Gary, Emma, Yvonne and Mark as part of the senior management team.
Callum Nicholson said the company’s growth had been driven largely by reputation and long-standing relationships rather than rapid expansion.
“We are proud of the client base we have built over many years,” he said. “It includes schools, housing associations, local authorities and established companies such as Mercedes and Scott Bader.
“Much of our growth has come through recommendation, which gives us a strong platform for the future. As we move forward, we want to work with more local businesses and continue delivering reliable, high-quality services.”
Inter County Service Group continues to operate from Rushden and employs staff from across the local area.
