Northampton’s Royal & Derngate has been crowned the UK’s Most Welcoming Theatre at the 2025 UK Theatre Awards — national recognition of the venue’s contribution to the town’s cultural and visitor economy.
The award highlights the theatre’s commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and community engagement, which judges said played a key role in strengthening Northampton’s reputation as a cultural destination.
Chief executive Jo Gordon said the accolade reflected the “hard work, professionalism and enthusiasm” of staff and volunteers who have continued to deliver an exceptional visitor experience despite recent challenges, including the discovery of RAAC concrete in the building’s foyer.
“It’s wonderful to see our teams recognised for maintaining a welcoming and safe environment while working through building restrictions,” she said.
Artistic director Jesse Jones added that the theatre’s reopening had created new opportunities to engage with the local community and independent creatives. “We’ve hosted art exhibitions, vintage markets and video gaming events, alongside supporting local artists and running a thriving community programme,” he said.
The UK Theatre Awards celebrate creative excellence across the performing arts sector. Royal & Derngate’s recognition underlines the role of arts venues in boosting local economies, driving visitor spend, and supporting employment in Northamptonshire’s cultural industries.
