WHEN Apollo 11 was about to land on the moon 50 years ago, its guidance computer system gave a ‘1202’ program alarm that was swiftly analysed by NASA, deemed unimportant and the crew continued about their business – the rest, as they say, is history.
Business systems don’t always carry that level of jeopardy, and they aren’t usually under the scrutiny of the entire world, but experienced and reliable system and database administrators remain invaluable to diagnose and fix any problems that might arise before they cause any issues.
As is happens, Raportix is currently working on projects for an UK-based aerospace company whose ground-based systems are just as important as the on-board systems on the remote spacecraft, and rely on system administrators to keep everything working.
And whether it’s up in space or back down to earth, businesses in all sectors need assurances that their IT infrastructure will continue to run smoothly and keep the wheels turning.
Established in 2001 in Northamptonshire, Raportix is an IT consultancy specialising in Unix/Linux System and Database Administration. With more than 30 years’ experience in the IT industry, including the worlds of banking, finance, aerospace, public sectors and academia, Raportix can offer experience in supporting multiple operating systems, database platforms, physical servers, virtualisation and software applications.
Whether SMEs or larger organisations, most companies have operating and database systems running on their infrastructure of servers and they require human managing and intervention. Tasks performed by a system and database administrator will include, but are not limited to, security patching, software updates, licencing, server configuration, installation and maintenance of software applications as necessary as per the client or company’s requirements. It is also their role to troubleshoot and fix problems that occur.
In addition, in the years before Raportix, I worked as a Web Developer and, as a result, purchased a portfolio of Northamptonshire-based and generic web domains to be used for future web projects. Due to the demand of system and database work over the years, and time constraints, many of these projects did not come to fruition. Now, these mature domains – such as brackmills.com and westonfavell.com – we are able to offer these domain names for sale. They can be purchased outright by businesses or any web design agencies wishing to use them in their course of business.
