Cycle4Cynthia, the annual charity bike ride in support of Cynthia Spencer Hospice, is set to return this September following last year’s weather-related cancellation.
The event was forced to abandon its 2024 edition just hours before it was due to begin, after torrential rain and lightning rendered conditions unsafe for participants. Organisers are now hoping for a record-breaking turnout in 2025, buoyed by strong community support and renewed determination.
This year’s ride will take place on Sunday 21st September, with cyclists once again setting off from the grounds of Althorp Estate to complete routes through the Northamptonshire countryside. Distances range from five to 70 miles, ensuring the event remains accessible to riders of all ages and abilities.
Since its inception 22 years ago, Cycle4Cynthia has raised more than £800,000 for the hospice, which provides specialist palliative care for patients and families across the region.
Participants are also encouraged to stay for the post-ride festivities, with family-friendly activities and entertainment planned at the finish line to mark the occasion.
Anita Frith, Director of Income Generation and Communications at the hospice, said the team had been “devastated” to cancel last year’s event but were looking forward to welcoming record numbers this autumn.
“We simply couldn’t allow the ride to go ahead in such dangerous conditions,” she said. “This year, we’re offering a range of routes – five, 11, 25, 50 and 70 miles – so there’s something for everyone. The event has always been about more than just cycling; it’s about the community coming together in support of hospice care.”
Among those taking part in previous years is Kate Stamp, who completed the 10-mile course in memory of her friend Rachel, a former hospice patient.
“I was nervous at first, as I was on my own without supporters, but the atmosphere was amazing and the encouragement along the way meant a lot,” she said.
Cyclists can take advantage of early bird entry fees until 31st July. Further details and registration can be found at: https://cynthiaspencer.org.uk/c4c/
