Hundreds of cyclists have helped Cycle4Cynthia raise more than £20,000 for Cynthia Spencer Hospice Charity as the Northampton charity marks its 50th anniversary.
Riders took part in the annual cycling challenge on Sunday September 27, starting and finishing at Holdenby House and following routes through the Northamptonshire countryside.
The event, one of the charity’s flagship fundraisers, included 10-mile and 25-mile routes as well as a new 50-mile challenge introduced to coincide with the hospice’s anniversary year.
Routes took cyclists past Northamptonshire landmarks including Althorp House, Kelmarsh Hall and Cottesbrooke Hall.
Participants were encouraged to raise at least £50 each in sponsorship, with the charity reporting that Cycle4Cynthia had generated more than £20,000.
Kerry Baker completed the 25-mile route with her husband, sister and brother-in-law.
“As a family who has experienced first-hand what it is like to have someone close to us need care and support, we really appreciate the importance of the work Cynthia Spencer Hospice does for local families,” she said.
“It felt like a lovely way to support a charity that provides such an important service within our community – even more so as they celebrate 50 years this year.
“It was a great opportunity to spend time together, get out on our bikes and support a fantastic local cause at the same time. We absolutely loved the whole day from the atmosphere at the start line, to the amazing volunteers cheering us on along the route, and then the fantastic welcome at the finish, there was such a brilliant sense of community.”
Kerry added: “For me, supporting local charities such as Cynthia Spencer is incredibly important because these organisations are right here in our communities, supporting local people and their families when they need it most.
“The work they do has a huge impact, often during some of the most difficult and emotional times in people’s lives. Being able to play a small part in helping them continue that work is something I’m really proud to support.”
Cyclists were joined at Holdenby House by spectators, sponsors and volunteers, with family activities taking place in the event’s Charity Village. Riders received a commemorative medal after crossing the finish line.
Katie Fouracre, community and events fundraiser lead at Cynthia Spencer Hospice Charity, said: “Cycle4Cynthia is one of our flagship fundraisers, and we are immensely grateful to all the cyclists who took part in this fantastic challenge. This year was incredibly special as our Big50 mile route marked five decades of the care we have provided in Northamptonshire, something we are very proud of.
“Seeing so many riders work together to raise over £20,000 is inspiring and their amazing efforts will go towards safeguarding our vital services for our community, when they need it the most.
“Thank you to everyone who took part, who came along as cheerleaders and to all our sponsors and volunteers, without whom, events like this would not be possible.”
